By Piyush Agarwal: A contingent of 200 Indians will add to the country’s illustrious heritage when they travel to Birmingham for the showpiece event at the Commonwealth Games from July 28 to August 8.

India bagged its best ever medal tally at the Olympics when it won seven at the Tokyo Games last year. After performing well at the highest level, India will look to emulate their efforts at the Gold Coast Games, where they won 66 medals.
However, this time India will be missing some of its biggest superstars including Neeraj Chopra, Saina Nehwal, Vikas Krishan and Mary Kom. Other notable players missing from action include Rani Rampal (Hockey), Tajinderpal Singh Toor (Shooting), Aishwarya Babu (Athletics) and MC Mary Kom (Boxing).
In Birmingham, 72 countries and territories will compete in around 20 sports, including women’s T20 cricket, 3X3 basketball and 3X3 wheelchair basketball. India will compete in 19 games and its women’s cricket team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will be looking for a place on the podium.
The biggest blow to India’s pursuit of a rich medal haul was when the shot put was withdrawn from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Shooting and archery (which also went down) are Indian events where the country’s athletes have reached the podium many times. Of all the medals India has won so far, about 27 percent have been won in shooting alone.

Birmingham’s 2022 Commonwealth Games are upon us. The quadrennial event has been India’s favorite international hunting ground and also a platform for Olympic preparation.
India has participated in the Commonwealth Games since the second edition of the event in 1934, apart from 1930, 1950, 1962 and 1986. The Games involving the Commonwealth of Nations were first held in 1930.
Since 1934, India has won 503 medals at the Commonwealth Games – 181 gold, 173 silver and 149 bronze – of which 231 have come in the last three games. India’s most successful Games came in 2010 in New Delhi when it won 101 medals in the discipline and is the second highest medal tally ever. Having made their debut in the quadrennial event in 1934, India are fourth in the all-time medal tally behind Australia, England and Canada.

India represented itself as a British colony in the so-called British Empire Games in 1934, sending six athletes to the Games. India won their first CWG medal in their first appearance when wrestler Rashid Anwar won bronze in men’s 74kg freestyle wrestling. However, India needed three more editions to win their second medal.
In the 1958 Games, things took a turn and India won their first CWG gold when Milkha Singh dominated the men’s 440 yards at Cardiff. In the same year, wrestler Leela Ram also won the gold medal in the 100 kg freestyle category. In the 1958 Games as well, Indian women participated in the CWG with field athletes Stephanie D’Souza and Elizabeth Davenport in Indian colours. D’Souza competed in the 100 meters and 220 meters at the 1958 Games. Since 1958, India has won consecutive medals at the CWG.
The show dominating Indian sports comes from three events: shooting, weightlifting and wrestling. Out of its 503 medals, India won 135 in shooting, 125 in weightlifting and 102 in wrestling in various categories. Since the turn of the century, India has also been successful with its singles badminton players.
Currently, India’s most successful athlete at the CWG is shot putter Jaspal Rana with 15 medals: nine gold, four silver and two bronze.
