There’s no such thing as a round number anniversary that inspires a sports league to list the “Greatest [insert round number] players of all time.” And with the WNBA turning 25 this year, they unveiled such a ranking to celebrate the 25 greatest players in its history.
One of the most important takeaways from the W25 list is that the league would be nowhere near where it is today without the support of the LGBTQ community. Of the top 25 WNBA players of all time, nine are athletes, over a third of the list.
In some circles, the best WNBA team of all time is up for debate. Seattle Storm Arguments. Others insist it’s the Minnesota Lynx. But as the league’s top ranking makes abundantly clear, the best roster in WNBA history is an LGBTQ team.
Seimone Augustus was the heart and soul of the four-time WNBA champion Lynx, winning WNBA Finals MVP in 2011 and 11th in league history in points at the time of her retirement in 2021. She also made her presence felt in fight for marriage equality, speaking out against Minnesota’s proposed anti-LGBTQ marriage amendment during the 2012 finals and celebrating her relationship in the wake of the Obergefell decision.

Sue Bird is, of course, one of the most famous LGBTQ power couples in professional sports with fiancée Megan Rapinoe. A W game like few players before or since, Bird set a record that season by becoming the first player in league history to record 3,000 career assists. In addition, she has won four championships and is the first woman to win WNBA titles in three different decades. Even putting all that aside, Bird is on this list for her Avril Lavigne cover.
Elena Delle Donne has overcome health issues to establish herself as one of the most dominant players in the league. Reaching 3,000 career points faster than any player in WNBA history, Delle Donne is also the first to win MVP with two teams: the Chicago Sky and the Washington Mystics. She made a public appearance in a Vogue profile in 2016 with her future wife, Amanda Clifton.
Brittany Griner established herself with a stellar college tenure at Baylor despite being encouraged to stay in the closet by head coach Kim Mulkey. The first WNBA player to record a slam dunk in the playoffs, Griner has made six All-Star teams. He dated after being drafted first overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2013 and married Glory Johnson of the Tulsa Shock in 2015 after a tumultuous courtship that included a mutual arrest on domestic violence charges. The two have since split up.
Angel McCoughtry also felt the sting of discrimination as he revealed on Instagram in 2015: “My last overseas team threatened me if I didn’t post a fake letter on social media. If it was written, my relationship was a lie.” But she stayed true to herself in the end, enthusing that “love is a great feeling and God is love.” The 2009 Rookie of the Year and winner of titles in 2012 and 2013, McCarthy set the WNBA Finals single-game scoring record with 38 points for the Atlanta Dream in 2011.

Bena Stewart has a 2021 for the ages: propose to her friend and WNBA rival Marta Xargay in May, win her second Olympic gold medal in August and welcome her first child into the world a day later. That follows 2020 where he won Finals MVP while leading the Storm to a championship and was named one of Sports Illustrated’s Athletes of the Year for his work as an athlete activist. At this point, naming the W25 sounds like something Stewart would do to be cool in his spare time.

Sheryl Swoopes is a legend as one of the most prominent floor athletes of her era and for being outspoken about her LGBTQ relationships. A winner of four WNBA championships with the Houston Comets and a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, Swoopes’ superstar status was already cemented when she became an active player in 2005. She mentioned her relationship with The candid statement was rare at the time. Although Swoopes eventually ended the relationship and married a man, she remains an important figure in the history of LGBTQ athletics.
Diana Taurasi kept scoring and scoring throughout her career, eventually becoming the fastest player in W history to reach 6,000 career points in 2013. Taurasi celebrated that success the only way she knew how: by continuing to score buckets, eventually becoming the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer. In 2017, he celebrated out of court marrying Mercury’s ex-partner Penny Taylor. We suggested she get some points for her wedding gift, but it turns out she already has 9,174 of them.
Ranking The Top 25 Wnba Players For 2021
Candace Parker just went public at the end of 2021 and has won two MVPs and two WNBA titles. The WNBA is in its 23rd season and we’ve seen some pretty amazing talent over the years. Some of these stars still shine today.
On the 15th and 20th anniversaries of the season, the league honors the greatest players of all time. This is what we will do. All the players who were respected then are here now.
Augustus is currently sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury, but looks poised to suit up for the Minnesota Lynx sometime in 2019. When that happens, it will be her 14th season in the WNBA. Entering June, Augustus is 11th in league history with 5,836 points and sixth with a 48.2 shooting percentage. Did we mention she’s also an eight-time All-Star and four-time WNBA champion?
Bird, like Augustus, is currently sidelined with a knee injury, but should hit the field at some point this season. While highly unlikely, if Bird never plays another minute of action in the WNBA, her legacy is already grand. The point guard is an 11-time All-Star, a three-time league champion with the Seattle Storm and the WNBA’s all-time assists leader (2,831).
Sylvia Fowles Is As Dominant As Sue Bird. Why Isn’t She Better Known?
Catchings played all 15 seasons of her WNBA career with Indiana. She ranks in the top five all-time in scoring (7,380 points) and rebounds (3,316) and leads the WNBA with 1,074 career steals. A 10-time All-Star, five-time Defensive Player of the Year and 2011 league MVP, Catchings is considered in some circles to be the greatest player in WNBA history.
While Cash was a four-time WNBA All-Star and two-time game MVP, perhaps her greatest asset came as a leader. In her 15-year career, Cash won three WNBA titles with two different teams. Two of them came with Detroit. Cash, who ranks in the top 20 in career scoring and rebounding, is the director of franchise development for the New York Liberty.
After playing professionally in Europe for years, Cooper’s WNBA career began at age 34. She was an integral part of the Houston Comets that won the first four championships in WNBA history. Cooper was also Finals MVP in each of those seasons and league MVP in 1997 and ’98. Cooper played just five seasons in the WNBA, but her career average of 20.9 is the best in league history.
It’s hard to find a better defensive player in WNBA history. The league MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in 1999 with Sacramento, Griffith averaged 13.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and one block per game during an 11-year career that included eight All-Star selections and a championship with the Kings in 2005. Also was Finals MVP.

Still going strong in her 12th season, Foles is the best post player in the game today. Entering this season, Foles was averaging a career-high 16.1 points and nearly 10 rebounds. He is currently the league’s career leader in field goal percentage at over 59 percent and rebounds at nearly 10 per game. After failing to win a WNBA title in her first seven seasons with Chicago, Fowles won two with the Minnesota Lynx.
Hammon has certainly made her mark in the WNBA after 16 seasons. He is a six-time All-Star.
