Asked how many closures there were in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware, Rite Aid spokesman Jeffrey Olson said, “Unfortunately, we cannot provide a list.”
This year has seen the consolidation of large pharmacy chains across the country that have played a critical role in COVID-19 testing and vaccination.
“Despite labor market challenges, our pharmacists and warehouse teams have been able to meet unprecedented volumes for Covid and flu shots, Covid tests and other clinical services,” he said.
In November, CVS announced it would close 900 locations over three years, about 10% of its stores. A spokeswoman for CVS said it would not share the locations to close until the spring. The company announced that existing locations will continue to specialize, with the remaining stores including primary care providers, wellness-oriented “wellness centers” and traditional stores.
Cvs, The Largest Drugstore Chain In The United States, Announced That It Will Be Closing 900 Stores, 10% Of Its Pharmacies Over A Three Year Period, New York, Ny, November 22, 2021
“The reality is we have a lot of retail pharmacy locations in the United States,” said Adam Fein, CEO of the Drug Channel Institute, a Philadelphia-based research firm that examines the economics of the pharmaceutical industry.
According to Fein, Americans have about 60,000 places to buy prescription drugs, including drugstores, independent pharmacies, supermarkets and mass retailers. That number has remained steady, though other retailers, such as department stores, have had to retool their models and proximity as consumer habits have changed.
The political future of President Biden’s social spending plan is in flux as the Senate’s sharp majority of Democrats demand absolute agreement among members.
At the same time, “the fastest growing segment of the pharmaceutical industry in the United States is called specialty drugs,” Fein said. Because these relatively expensive drugs are for rare diseases, such as specific cancer treatments, they do not have a large market. Regular pharmacies cannot stock them and instead compete with many other stores to stock high-volume, low-cost drugs.
The Pittsburgh Grocery Stores, Pharmacies And Other Essentials Still Open Amid Covid 19
That market includes big players like Amazon and Walmart, who are increasingly playing in the prescription drug market by offering discounts on popular drugs.
While pharmacies make most of their money behind stores dispensing prescriptions, experts say storefront general retail is also in trouble.
Pharmacies can’t keep up with customers coming in for the food, clothing and cosmetics they stock, retail analyst Neil Saunders told CNBC. When it came to more specialized retailers like Sephora hunting makeup customers, they became vulnerable.
According to the Drug Channel Institute, CVS is still ranked as the largest distributor in 2020. Rite Aid is seventh and Walmart is fifth.

Cvs To Close 900 Stores Over Next 3 Years
The company said Thursday it will close 300 stores a year for the next three years, roughly one-tenth of its 10,000 retail locations, and it will reduce the number of stores in some locations.
CVS Health said demographic changes, consumer buying patterns and future health “will require us to ensure we have the right types of stores in the right locations.”
The closings make sense as CVS Health seeks to rebrand many of its stores as a “one-stop shop” for care, Edwards Jones analyst Ashtin Evans said, adding that the company’s Aetna health insurance business should drive customers to those stores.
The company did not release any details Thursday about where the closures would take place. They said they would start next spring.
Downtown Cvs Closes With Little Warning
Major drugstore chains frequently close poorly performing stores or shutter locations for other business purposes. For example, CVS competitor Walgreens has closed several stores in San Francisco since 2019 due to concerns about organized retail theft.
The growth of online shopping has removed the need for CVS and Walgreens to operate large chain drugstores minutes from most American homes.
CVS Health has neglected its retail business and relegated some of its locations “to the brink of irrelevance,” GlobalData managing director Neil Saunders said in an email.
“Many stores are stuck in the past with a combination of poor lighting, depressing interiors, disorganized merchandise and poor product assortment,” Saunders said in an email. “They’re not destinations or places where people go out for anything other than necessity.”
Cvs Closures: Drug Store Chain To Close Around 900 Locations In Response To Changing ‘consumer Buying Patterns’
Some are traditional pharmacies offering retail products and some healthcare services. While others will be dedicated to consumer primary care, the company will roll out an enhanced version of its “HealthHub” locations.
The company started introducing those stores a few years ago. The stores are focused on helping consumers manage and maintain their health with chronic conditions such as diabetes. Those places can include health professionals like nutritionists and community rooms like yoga classes.
Drugstores are reinventing their locations as they strive to become more than just places to pick up prescription drugs and cough syrup. They have become the main source of COVID-19 vaccines and annual flu shots.
Employee problems are solved as companies expand their focus. They raised starting wages and hired thousands of additional workers for their stores.
Warnings To Shoppers From Ex Cvs Employees
But customers in markets like Kansas City and Indianapolis have complained to local newspapers about long waits or problems getting shots because pharmacies have closed.
A Walgreens spokeswoman said the company always reviews staffing levels and tries to minimize disruption to customers when staffing shortages affect stores.
CVS Health said Thursday it expects to take an impairment charge of between $1 billion and $1.2 billion in the fourth quarter for the closings. That rate does not affect the company’s 2021 adjusted earnings forecast, which was raised earlier this month.
In addition to operating drugstores and selling health insurance, CVS Health also operates prescription drug plans for larger clients such as insurers and employers.

The first of the 900 closures will begin in the spring. Those closures will be announced later.
