To better understand how NBA fans spend money on tickets, arena food and beverage, and team and player merchandise, we surveyed fans of all 30 teams, totaling more than 850 people.

Looking at which NBA fans spend the most money on team merchandise and merchandise, fans of winning teams are more likely to spend money on apparel. Only three teams in the top 10 posted a losing record last season, and only two failed to qualify for some form of postseason action.

The two biggest fan bases that spend on team gear – the Los Angeles Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks – represent the last two teams to win NBA championships. That’s why we also asked fans to tell us how much they spend every year on buying and selling players for the teams they work for.

Three fan groups reported spending more than $100 a year on uniforms of players from other teams: the Warriors, Bucks and Nuggets. Interestingly, these are all very good teams with such superstars that their fans adore.

On the other side of the spectrum, we found out which NBA fans spend the least on team merchandise. Every fan on this list spends less on their favorite team’s jersey than Warriors, Bucks, and Nuggets fans spend on other teams’ players.

Additionally, fans of six of those teams spend less than $100 on their favorite team’s gear each year, with Minnesota Timberwolves fans spending the least. Minnesota fans are the only ones to spend less than $75 a year and the only ones to spend less than half the league average when it comes to merchandise.

Two of the three fan bases that spend the least money on a team, the Timberwolves and Grizzlies, support teams that have never reached the NBA Finals. Among them are Indiana Pacers fans who root for the team that made the only Finals appearance in franchise history 20 years ago.

Over the years, the NBA’s star players have had a huge impact on ticket sales, especially on the road. Unless they play for your local team, most fans only get a few opportunities each season to see stars like Michael Jordan or LeBron James in person. With that in mind, we asked fans to tell us how much they would pay above the average ticket price to see each of the NBA’s 10 most popular players, based on last season’s best-selling jerseys.

We used the survey results to determine what percentage of NBA fans would be willing to pay at least $50 more than usual to see each of these players. Steph Curry led the way, with one in five NBA fans willing to pay more for his performance. LeBron James is the only other player with at least 15% of fans to earn the same honor, though Giannis Antetokounmpo came close at 14.71%.

In addition to these top players visiting each NBA city several times each season, their star power means they often play in nationally televised games. In our poll, we asked fans to tell us which stars they are most likely to watch their favorite team not compete in, and which players they would avoid.

Curry led the way again, with over 20% of fans saying they would watch him when he’s on TV, followed by Damian Lillard and Kevin Durant.

Interestingly, two of Durant’s teammates, James Harden and Kyrie Irving, are the two players most shunned by fans. While it may seem like a conundrum for neutral fans as they decide whether or not to get involved, injuries meant the trio only played a handful of games together last season. Given the injury histories of all three players, that trend could continue.

Whether you’re watching a visiting star or simply rooting for your favorite team against a division rival, no trip to an NBA arena is complete without a meal. Our survey asked fans how much they spend on food and drink for themselves and everyone attending matches with them. On average, NBA fans can expect to spend less than $70 per game.

Although the fan base spends a lot more than that. It turns out that Los Angeles Clippers fans spend more than $100 more than the league average during a game at Staples Center. That number is more than $70 more than Lakers fans spend at games, despite the two teams playing in the same arena.

It’s also worth noting that Clippers fans spend so much because they’re one of three teams in the top 10 that haven’t won an NBA title in the last 25 years. The Nuggets and Knicks are the other two. New Orleans Pelicans fans, on the other hand, are more frugal with their game viewing. Pelicans fans spend more than $40 less than the league average on food and drink.

Interestingly, no team since the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers has won an NBA title with food and beverage costs lower than 10th. Four teams – the Pelicans, Timberwolves, Grizzlies and Hornets – have never made the Finals. appearance.

The same three fans who spend the least on concessions overall also spend the least on alcohol, in that order. Pelicans fans spend less than one-third of the league average on alcohol, while Atlanta Hawks fans spend less than half of the league average.
