So you’ve always dreamed of pursuing a career as a professional performer, and now you’re looking at opportunities to study musical theater and dance, but you’re probably wondering…
We all know that a career in the entertainment industry is all about the skills you learn and the talent you show in the audition room, right? Isn’t it just about how well you can sing, dance and act? So who really cares about a “paper” or a musical theater degree?
Well… this argument is not as simple as you might think. The truth is, there really isn’t a simple, well-thought-out answer, as it depends a lot on your individual goals for the future! The real question you need to ask yourself is what you want to achieve in the future OUTSIDE of the audition room or off the stage.
What Do The Rqf Levels Mean?
Think about this for a moment: Do you just want to act, or do you want to explore other career options in the future? Would you ever consider emigrating? How about studying further one day? Could you see yourself ever expanding into education as a teacher or educator? Here are some questions to ask yourself.
But first let’s be clear that when you walk into an audition room hoping to land the role of your dreams – the audition committee generally does NOT care what level of qualifications you have, and directors, producers and choreographers will probably never ask you for your degree or diploma. What matters to them is whether you have the right training and professional preparation from a legitimate institution, and whether you have the skills and talent to achieve exceptional performance!
THEREFORE…… it is important to remember that as a growing and evolving being with multiple interests and talents – you may want to diversify your skills and career in the future.
Because of this, there are some important considerations to bear in mind when considering formal qualifications versus skills-only training. 1) Do you think you would emigrate one day?

Emigration is a very complex process, so we won’t go into all the legalities here, but you should know that many EU and OECD countries give preference to skilled immigrants, and many countries work on a points-based system when judging immigration applications. .
This means that applicants must meet a specific set of requirements for which they receive points. The more points you have, the more likely you are to be accepted. Points are awarded based on various criteria, including age, language skills, income and – you guessed it – education! One way to gain these valuable points is to have an official higher qualification that is recognized and accredited.
2) Would you like to have the opportunity to expand into other sectors of the entertainment industry in the future?
As an evolving being with a variety of skills and talents, you may want to branch out into other creative (or business) fields at some point in your life. Management, leadership, research and other desired positions usually require a formal, advanced degree, even within the performing arts sector.
