After two rounds of single elimination games, we are down to the final four teams in the WNBA playoffs. There are still a few teams left that I don’t think will make it this far.

In our initial post-season rankings, I didn’t have Sky or the Mercers as a final four. In particular, I thought the Storms would have had a chance to defend their championship in the Finals, but the Mercury beat them in an 85-80 overtime win without an injury to Seattle star Breanna Stewart.

The Sky also took care of business, knocking off the Lynx 89-76. So now that we have the top four, and we’ve seen what two teams are capable of this postseason, let’s rank these teams again.

They were the lowest-ranked of the four teams in the early postseason rankings, and even though they won convincingly against the Lynx, I’m backing the overall seed Suns in the next fight. Initially, my concern was about Candace Parker’s health, given that she has missed two times this season with an ankle injury, but now, I wonder if the Sky can stay consistent against a fiery Suns team.

Skye has talent, from Candace Parker to Allie Quigley, Diamond DeShields, Kalea Bakkar and more. But can they get more wins against a dominant Connecticut team? The Sun is very consistent throughout the regular season, the Sky, not so much. So in this first best-of-five playoff, the Sky didn’t just have to be firing on all cylinders; they have to do it three times.

The Phoenix Mercury have looked like a different team since the Olympic break, and that was evident in their final postseason game. I’m sure they have a chance to go a long way. Mercury always seems to find a way to win even when the odds are not in their favor.

At the start of the postseason, I said it would be consistency and grit for the Mercury, and they’ve shown they can do both. There’s no denying they’re a solid team, with an array of weapons from Brittany Griner, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Diana Taurasi to Sophie Cunningham, a sniper, powering them to a first-half win against the Liberty. Their inspired last-second win against Seattle now gives them a chance to compete against the Aces for a shot at the finals. The Mercury needed Diana Taurasi to be healthy and at the top of her game, but Griner’s interior dominance gave them a chance to compete with the best teams in the league.

Originally, the Aces were the team I had set to win it all, and given that they haven’t played a postseason game, you might wonder why they fell to three. Well, even though they have fresh legs and are a powerhouse with elite players like Aya Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray and Liz Cambage, I feel like the Suns just came off the regular season and I think they will carry it over. I also feel the Aces may struggle to get rid of the Mercury, resulting in a longer streak and a tougher leg in the WNBA Finals.

The Aces finished with the best offense in the league by a significant margin. They finished the regular season No. 2 in defense. Cambage and Wilson could battle anyone in the world, and theoretically should face Griner and Jones (if the Suns beat the Sky) to win the championship. Plumn, Gray and Rikunna Williams will need to consistently strike out for the Aces to achieve their championship dreams.

Really, this is all speculation, but given what I’ve seen Mercury do in the postseason and how dominant the Sun was during the regular season, I expect the Aces to take second place once again.

If the Suns took care of business like they did during the regular season, this championship would be theirs. Of course, the Aces or Mercury will struggle with that, but if you look at the overall hard work the Suns have put in this season, they deserve to be the championship favorites going into the semi-finals. But the only thing I believe can stop them is if their opponents can limit the possible scoring of MVP Jonkel Jones and partner DeVanna Bonner. If one struggles, the other will explode, but if the team limits both, it will equalize.

The Suns’ roster has changed significantly since they advanced to the 2019 WNBA Finals, with Jones remaining at center. I feel like this year will be different this time. I think they will walk away with the championship trophy when all is said and done.

The Suns finish the regular season with the most dominant defense in the league. They are also no. 3 in the offensive rating, and no. 1 in the net rating. This is a formidable team of veterans working their way through their massive superstardom and hungry for a title shot after failing to defeat the Mystics in 2019.

With that said, we really don’t know how this will all turn out. If you had told me early in the playoffs that the Storm were out, I would have thought you were lying. But that’s the best part of the playoffs. You never really know. The Minnesota Lynx clinched first place with an 86-72 win over the fifth-seeded Washington Mystics. The Los Angeles Sparks kept their No. 2 seed after defeating the No. 1 Connecticut Sun. 4, 81-70.

Arguably the hottest team right now is the New York Liberty, as they picked up their 10th straight win by sliding to the No. 7 Dallas, 82-81. New York is the third seed, and according to the old playoff format, will be the champion of the Eastern Conference.

The Phoenix Mercury held on to the sixth seed with an 84-70 decision over the Atlanta Dream, and the Seattle Storm stayed in eighth place after defeating the Chicago Sky 85-80.

This is the second year of the new WNBA playoff format, where the four lower-seeded teams will face off in single-elimination games. After the re-election, the winner will face third and fourth place in another first round match. The final is a best-of-five series.
